Breadth and depth of strategic processing during text comprehension

In this study, 58 Norwegian undergraduates read 10 paragraphs on a relatively unfamiliar topic. Verbal protocol analysis was used to assess strategic text processing at different levels of depth, and post-reading written reports the topic were comprehension. Findings indicated that irrelevant negatively combination surface- deeper-level strategies positively related comprehension performance, but only unique (negative) predictor performance after individual differences in reading skills prior knowledge had been controlled for. Finally, absence prosessing found mediate effect performance. Taken together, these findings highlight potential value combining depth into broad approach for readers who lack competence or expertise an area.
